What is Play Club?

Play is about joyful discovery and having fun. It is also about taking risks, experimenting, and testing boundaries. At Play Club we are dedicated to child-directed play and exploration.

Child-directed play means that children choose what to play and make up their own rules for how to play. When kids play this way, they figure things out for themselves.

Play Club is in a large space in Gowanus with plenty of repurposed materials and freedom for children to create, destroy, explore, and express. At Play Club adults take a step back in order to listen closely to the children present, inviting the kids to figure out what is important to them.

Why Play?

NYC kids have busy schedules, dictated in large part by school and other adult-directed activities. At Play Club we want to give children an opportunity to take charge of their own time and play.

Inspired by Adventure Playgrounds and the artist Bruno Munari’s “Tactile Workshop” method, we invite children to pursue their creative ideas without the pressure of performance.

At Play Club there is no right way to play or to be creative. Through child-directed play, kids learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them. When adults step back, children need one another.
